The Report

Three signals. One answer: can AI actually see your brand?

01

Index Status

Confirms whether your pages appear in the Common Crawl index - the ground truth of what's available to train and ground AI models. Pages that aren't indexed are invisible to AI, no matter how well they rank on Google.

02

Authority Metrics

Your Harmonic Centrality (HC) rank and PageRank from the CC Web Graph - how central and how trusted your domain is in the link structure AI systems learn from.

03

Trend Analysis

Your authority trajectory across Common Crawl releases - whether your AI visibility is climbing, flat, or quietly eroding before it ever shows up in your Google rankings.

Fewer than10%

of the sources cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity rank in Google's top 10 for the same query

The Gap

You can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible to AI.

Almost 90% of ChatGPT's citations come from pages that never reach the first or second page of search. AI systems don't rank pages the way Google does - they recall what they learned during training and retrieve sources that were part of that data. If your SEO is strong but your training-data presence is weak, you win the search result and lose the AI answer. That's the gap most brands don't know they have - and the one this tool measures.

The Shift

This isn't coming. It's already here.

The shift from search boxes to answer engines is happening faster than any channel change in two decades.

Every month you're not in the training data is a month your competitors are teaching AI to recommend them instead of you.

How It Works

How AI actually decides which brands it knows

Common Crawl is a nonprofit that has archived the open web since 2008 - a 9.5+ petabyte dataset cited in over 12,000 research papers. It has quietly become the foundational training corpus of the AI era.

Step 1

Crawl

Common Crawl's bot (CCBot) archives billions of pages a month. What it captures lands in the public dataset; what it misses doesn't exist as far as that dataset is concerned.

Step 2

Train

A 2024 Mozilla Foundation study found at least 64% of major language models were trained on filtered Common Crawl data. For GPT-3 - still powering free ChatGPT - over 80% of training tokens came from it.

Step 3

Cite

When an AI answers a question, it draws on what it learned. Brands well-represented in the training data are the ones it recalls and recommends.

"If you are not in the crawl, you are not in the model."

- COMMON CRAWL FOUNDATION

Two numbers decide how much AI learns about you

Harmonic Centrality (HC) Rank

How central your domain is in the web's link graph. The more central you are, the more often you're crawled, and the more of your pages enter the training data. A lower HC rank number is better.

PageRank

The classic measure of link authority. Together with HC, it signals how trustworthy AI training pipelines treat your domain.

The Catch

A one-time SEO or "AIO" overhaul can't fix this.

Most agencies will audit your page once, add some structured data, tidy your tags, and call it "AI-ready." That treats a moving target like a fixed one.

The one-and-done myth

"Add schema, clean up your meta tags, ship the page, done."

The reality

Training-data inclusion is a moving target. Your presence isn't a checkbox - it's a trajectory that shifts with every Common Crawl release.

01

The graph keeps moving.

Common Crawl recalculates authority every 1-3 months. Your HC rank rises or falls relative to everyone else - including competitors actively building it.

02

Access breaks silently.

A CDN's default setting, a new WAF rule, or an over-aggressive robots.txt can block CCBot overnight. Nearly 89% of domains now disallow at least one AI crawler - many without realizing it.

03

JavaScript hides your content.

CCBot doesn't run JavaScript. A modern, framework-heavy site can look perfect to users and be largely invisible to the crawler.

04

First movers compound.

The top 5 domains already capture 38% of AI citations; the top 20 capture 66%. Once a competitor is the cited answer, that drives the links and mentions that keep them the cited answer.

Staying in the answer requires ongoing measurement and ongoing work - not a single overhaul. That's a different kind of partner.

The MAXPlaces Approach

We don't make you "AI-ready" once.
We keep you in the answer.

MAXPlaces built its S.T.A.R.SM framework - Strategic Planning, Technical SEO, Authority Building, and Results Measurement - for exactly this moment, where search, AI, and authority stop being separate workstreams. Strategic thinking, actionable results: we treat your AI visibility the way it should be treated - as an ongoing program, not a project with an end date. Our hybrid SEO + AIO/GEO model keeps you optimized for the search results that still matter and the AI answers that increasingly decide the deal.

"Strategic Thinking, Actionable Results."

S

Strategic Planning

We baseline your Common Crawl index status, HC rank, and PageRank, identify your training-data gaps, and benchmark you against the competitors AI is already citing.

T

Technical SEO

We fix what blocks the crawler: robots.txt and WAF/CDN rules, JavaScript rendering, structured data, semantic HTML, and internal linking that gets your important pages reached and captured.

A

Authority Building

We build authority where it actually moves the graph - link acquisition and content optimized for centrality, not vanity metrics, so your HC rank improves and more of your pages enter future training runs.

R

Results Measurement

We track your HC rank and PageRank trajectory across every Common Crawl release, catching erosion before it reaches your Google rankings and compounding your lead while competitors stand still.

Why MAXPlaces

A free checker tells you the score. A partner changes it.

The tool above is genuinely useful - and most brands have never run it. But knowing your HC rank doesn't improve it. Here's the difference between checking the number and moving it.

SEO optimizes how you rank in Google's results. AIO/GEO optimizes whether AI systems learned about you in the first place - a different and increasingly more decisive signal. You need both.

It's the nonprofit open-web archive that the majority of major AI models are trained on. If your content isn't captured there, it's largely absent from what those models know.

Not necessarily. Fewer than 10% of AI citations come from pages that rank in Google's top 10. Strong search rankings don't guarantee AI visibility.

That's increasingly costly. Publishers who blocked AI bots saw total traffic fall around 23% as AI tools became real referral sources. The goal is to be present and cited, not absent.

Because it's a trajectory, not a checkbox. Authority is recalculated every Common Crawl release, crawl access breaks silently, and competitors compound. Staying cited requires ongoing measurement and work.
